Envases Europe is aware of the extreme climate crisis facing the world, and is committed to promoting sustainability. This year, Envases Europe has joined the Science Based Targets initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize environmental impact with scientifically-based targets, and to establish a sustainable future approach across the company. “By offering sustainable packaging solutions, we are working towards a world where food, natural resources, and energy are used more consciously,” says Dan Aggertoft Christensen, President of Envases Europe.
Envases aims to define concrete sustainability goals by 2023
To achieve these goals, Envases Europe plans to define and submit its short-term goals this year. Once adopted, the company commits to achieving these goals by 2030. The first step is a thorough inventory of the Envases European locations to identify areas for improvement. This data forms the basis for defining concrete action points in the second step. Envases will then submit the defined short-term goals for approval by the Science Based Targets initiative.
The Envases location in Öhringen is also involved in this process. The initiative is expressly welcomed there, as Envases Öhringen GmbH has been a leading example in sustainability for years. For this purpose, a “Climate Action Plan” has been developed to further advance sustainability in all areas of the company. This plan includes energy and resource-efficient production processes, efficient and environmentally friendly logistics, and careful selection of suppliers.
A scientifically-based approach as the key to success
The company’s energy management is certified according to ISO 50001. In the printing and painting facilities, thermal post-combustion is used to avoid emissions. The resulting waste heat is used for heating and hot water, as well as for cooling systems and buildings through absorption technology. Jochen Massa, Managing Director of Envases Öhringen GmbH and Vice President of Cluster Europe, is also pleased that all efforts can now be based on a scientific foundation thanks to the Science Based Targets Initiative. “The importance of sustainable offerings to customers is growing. As a packaging company, we are therefore consistently preparing for sustainability to be a guiding theme that will significantly shape the future. It is important for us as a company to take responsibility not only in a social but also in an ecological sense.”
Envases also knows that time is pressing when it comes to climate protection! Therefore, Envases Europe intends to submit its short-term goals for approval in 2023. And globally, everyone is pulling together: Envases Mexico, the North American division of Envases, has also committed to the Science Based Targets Initiative.
What is the Science Based Targets-Initiative?
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) is an ambitious and results-driven organization committed to achieving the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, including limiting global warming to 1.5°C, and the 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It is a joint initiative of CDP, United Nations Global Impact, World Resource Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The initiative develops and validates methods and criteria for effective climate protection in companies, focusing on emissions reductions within their own value chains. Through close collaboration with each company, the Science Based Targets Initiative helps to set and define realistic and ambitious targets that will lead to greater innovation and effective reductions.
